Wichita – The Air Capital of the World
Wichita is the largest city in the state of Kansas. The city is located in south central Kansas. The city started out as a trading post in 1860s on the Chisholm Trail. In 1870, the city was incorporated. Later on, the city of Wichita became a major destination for cattle drives that are travelling towards the north. With this, the city earned the nickname, ‘Cowtown.’ However, later on, the nickname of the city was changed as the city’s economy has diversified and new industries begin to develop in the city.
Before the city’s aircraft industry developed and flourished, the city first became a major oil center in the country. The oil industry in the city developed and flourished. The money earned from the oil industry allowed the local entrepreneurs to invest in the airplane industry. It was in 1917 when the Cessna Comet was built in the city. This is the first aircraft created in the city. The second airplane to be created in the city was the Laird Swallow designed by Emil Matthew Laird. This is the first commercial airplane manufactured in the country. A total number of 43 of this aircraft were built from 1920 to 1923. Eventually, new manufacturing companies and this varied the aircraft industry in the city. In addition, the city has become a test center for new aviation.
In 1920s and 1930s, the city became the home of several successful aircraft manufacturing companies. These companies include Cessna, Stearman Aircraft, and Beechcraft. The city of Wichita was then transformed into a hub of aircraft production in the US. Later on, it earned another nickname, ‘The Air Capital of the World.’ The aircraft firms like Beechcraft, Boeing, Cessna, Learjet, and Spirit AeroSystems continues to operate manufacturing factories in the city today. In fact, the city remains a major center of the aircraft industry in the US.
As an industrial hub in the state of Kansas, the city is also considered a center for media, culture, and trade. The city is home to several large museums and parks. Moreover, there are also many theaters, and entertainment centers like the Intrust Bank Arena that made the city of Wichita their home. Aside from this, higher education is also prominent in the city with the city’s numerous universities. There are several universities in the city. One of these universities is the Wichita State University, the third largest university in Kansas State.
