Why Amarillo is the World’s Helium Capital

The city of Amarillo ranks as the 14th most populous city in the US state of Texas. It is home to the seat of government of the Potter County, and also the largest city in the Texas Panhandle, one of the regions in the Texas which encompasses 26 counties in the northernmost side of the state. Aside from being part of the Potter County, Amarillo also extends into the Randall County. The Amarillo Metropolitan Area has a total estimated population of 236, 113, which was combined from the four counties. Geographically, Amarillo is in the region of Llano Estacado. It was originally named Oneida, but was changed to Amarillo because of the yellow wildflowers blooming in the summer and spring nearby the city’s water resources, such as the Amarillo Creek and Amarillo Lake.

The city of Amarillo is known for many things. Just recently, it was named as America’s Rotor City, due to the assembly plant within its borders that manufactures the hybrid aircraft, V-22 Osprey. It is also home to the Pantex, the country’s one and only nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility. Amarillo also operates one of America’s largest meat packing areas. The title “The Yellow Rose of Texas” might be the result of the yellow blooms within the borders of the city, as well as the city name, Amarillo, which is the Spanish for the color yellow. However, its most distinctive title is the “Helium Capital of the World”.

In the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo is considered as the regional economic center. This might be the result of the steady business in meat packing, petroleum extraction and helium. The city is home to the most productive helium fields in the United States. In the late 1890s, Amarillo is famous for its agricultural resources, such as cattle, grain and feeds. However, gas and oil were discovered in the 1900s, which led oil and gas companies to settle down in the city. To supplement the oil and gas industry, the US government bought the Cliffside Gas Field, which has a high helium content in 1927. After that, the Amarillo Helium plant followed two years later. The Amarillo Helium plant was operated by the Federal Bureau of Mines.

For years, the said plant is the only commercial producer of helium in the whole world. In the Cliffside facility, the U.S. National Helium Reserve is still kept in the Bush Dome Reservoir. Although the helium industry has ceased to be a major economic player due to the privatization of local operations, the city of Amarillo is still remembered as the World’s Helium Capital. In front of the Don Harrington Discover Center is the Helium Monument, a structure that commemorates the time capsules of Amarillo’s glory days.
