Columbus: America’s Most Intelligent Community

The city of Columbus is located in the state of Ohio. The city is considered to be the state’s largest city as well as its capital. In fact, Columbus is considered as the country’s 15th largest city and 4th most populous capital based on population estimates. The city’s population in 2010 reached 787, 033, as reported by the United States Census Bureau. Geographically, the city began at the meeting point of two rivers, Oentangy and Scioto. By 1816, the incorporated city became Ohio’s capital and it began its expansion to three counties, namely: Franklin, Delaware and Fairfield. Currently, Columbus is the seat of government of Franklin County. The Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area is considered to the 3rd largest MSA in Ohio, next to Cleveland and Cincinnati. It has a population of 2, 308, 509, which also justifies its rank as the 28th largest MSA in the country. In addition, Columbus also merged with Chillicothe and Marion to form the Columbus Combined Statistical Area (CSA), which has an estimated population of 2, 348, 485.

Columbus is considered a major city due to its diverse economy as well as its large population. Some locals describe it as the San Francisco of the Midwest because of its prosperity in terms of many things. The city is a favorite destination among foreign tourists and local Americans because it provides a wide variety of sights and sounds to experience. Among its recognitions, Columbus has taken pride in its recently acquired title “America’s Most Intelligent City”.

The high literacy rate of Columbus is not lost during the deliberation of the Intelligent Community Forum or ICF Think Tank. As they presented their award, “Intelligent Community of the Year”, they made sure that the candidate cities are on par with their standards, or exceed their expectations. Among the 400 cities who participated in the global event, only 7 emerged as finalists and vie for the title. Remarkably, Columbus, Ohio was the only American city to be included in the final list. The criteria implemented by the ICF Think Tank involve leadership, sustainability and strong collaboration in the community or city. The process of checking qualifications was rigorous, since the members of the ICF need to visit each and every participating city to determine how they cope with technology and innovation today. Aside from Columbus, the following made it to the list: Stratford and Toronto in Canada, Oulu in Finland, Taoyuan County and Taichung City in Taiwan and Talinn in Estonia.
