The Naval Weapons Station in Concord

The city of Concord is located in the U.S. State of California. Formerly known as Todos Santos, Concord is considered as the largest city in the county of Contra Costa. Geographically, Concord is in the center of the regional suburban East Bay, which is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The cities of San Francisco and Oakland can be found on the northeast of the city, while Sacramento is in its southwest, and San Jose is in the north. Concord is bordered by Clayton (southeast), Pleasant Hill & Pacheco (west), Walnut Creek (south), Pittsburg & Bay Point (northeast) and Clyde (north). According to United States Census Bureau, the city of Concord has an estimated population of 122, 067 as of the year 2010. In terms of population, Concord is the most populous city in the Contra Costa County. It is the 46th most populous city in California, and ranks 206th in the whole United States.

The city of Concord was initially considered as a bedroom community in support of Oakland and San Francisco. Such setup had gone for forty years until the economy of the city flourished due to the number of employers building their companies within its borders. Based on the 2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, there are well-known companies that are providing jobs for the majority of the citizens, such as Chevron, Wells Fargo Credit Center, Bank of America Technology Center, PG&E, Safeway Inc., Macy’s and The Conco Companies among many others. Since then, Concord is already recognized as an individual entity with a self- sufficient economy.

However, Concord is also noted on the map of the United States for its Naval Weapons Station. Located in the northern region of Concord, the Concord Naval Weapons Station or the so-called NWS was formerly a military base during the World War II. The station was established in 1942, and functioned as a weapon storage depot. It also supplies the ships at the Port Chicago. During the Vietnam War, the Concord NWS played a significant role in processing, as well as delivering, thousands of naval materials to different destinations, such as the Middle East and the Southeast Asia. The Concord NWS supported the American war efforts until the very end.

Due to the changes in the operations of the military, the inland parts of the Concord NWS were stored because they are no longer of use. However, the city government would want to reuse the open space to develop park projects for the benefit of the city’s tourism.
