Gary: The Magic City of Steel

The city of Gary is located in the U.S. state of Indiana. Geographically, it can be found in the Lake County. It is part of the southeastern area of the metropolitan area of Chicago, just 25 miles from Chicago downtown in the state of Illinois. It also borders the southern end of Lake Chicago, a former lake bed and now the so-called Lake Michigan, and next to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The Census measured a total land area of 49.87 square miles and 7.31 square miles of water. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Gary has a total population of 80, 294 in 2010. In the year 2012, the population was estimated to be 79, 170.

The city of Gary has a rich history anchored to steel. Since its incorporation, the city has been already synonymous to the word “steel”. The United States Steel Corporation was the one responsible for the founding of the city in 1906. The land area was planned to house the company’s new plant called Gary Works. The name of the plant as well as the city was inspired by one of the company’s founding chairman and lawyer, Elbert Henry Gary.

The United States Steel Corporation or U.S. Steel is considered as an integrated steel producer that owns several major steel plants or production facilities all over the United States, Central Europe and Canada. It is also named as the 13th largest steel producer in the whole world as of the year 2010. Domestically, it is the largest steel producer in the country. Aside from steel, it also manages an oil business, but focuses more on steel before the downsizing than happened in the 1980s.

The steel industry in the city grew and prospered, bringing the economy along. However, it was not always a high life for the steel workers. In the 1960s, the competition brought by overseas steel corporations threatened the success of the city’s main industry. Many workers were laid off, and the economy declined. Through the years, the U.S. Steel Company continued to supply major corporations around the U.S., but they only hold a fraction of the employment level as compared to back then.

Today, the city is the home to major steel mills. The biggest one in the city is still Gary Works of the United States Steel Corporation. Other steel companies include Republic Steel, Gary Metal Manufacturing, Hilti, Inc., and Barsteel Corporation.
