Livonia: The History of the City

Among the many cities in the U.S. state of Michigan, the city of Livonia is the 9th largest municipality. Geographically, the city is located in the Wayne County. It can be found in the county’s northwestern part. According to the Census Bureau, the city covers 35.86 square miles, of which 35.70 square miles are land while the rest is water. The city can be described as a large suburb encompassing various traditional neighborhoods, which are built in the 1950s or 1960s. The wide array of communities is connected to the larger metropolitan area via the freeways. The so-called Metro Detroit holds a part of the city of Livonia. According to the United States Census Bureau, Livonia has a city population of 96, 942 as of the year 2010. However, it is expected to decrease in 2012, with an estimate of 95, 586. The Detroit Metro has a population of 4, 285, 832, with a part of its population from Livonia.

In 1835, the borders of the Livonia Township were established. The Legislature of the Territory of Michigan was the reason why the city was incorporated, thanks to the first pioneers from New York and New England. The name “Livonia” was already brought by the settlers because some of them were from the different locations also called Livonia, such as the one in Pennsylvania, a region in the Baltic Sea, New York, Latvia and Estonia. The group did not have a hard time deciding since they want the new township to commemorate their past locations.

During the early days of Livonia, there were small communities that made up the township. One of them is the McKinley’s Station, which is now known as the Elmwood. It was the first community to have a post office, from the year 1858 and 1906. Another post office can be observed in the neighboring township of Giltedge. It stayed from the year 1899 until the year 1902.

It was not until 1950 when the township of Livonia was incorporated into a city. This was achieved through voting participated by the citizens of the township. One of the main motivations for such move is to gain from the state’s one and only thoroughbred horse racetrack called the Detroit Race Course or DRC. The incorporation into a city will help gain tax revenues from the attraction that lure thousands of visitors all over the state. It was also noted that the city of Livonia had been visited by U.S. presidents, including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Richard Nixon and George W. Bush.
