The Libraries in the City of Lowell

The city of Lowell can be found in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. Geographically, Lowell can be found in the Middlesex County, of which it is one of the two county seats. It shares the seat of government with the city of Cambridge. Specifically, the city lies at the meeting point of two rivers, namely Concord River and Merrimack River. Within the borders of Lowell is the end of the mile-long rapids called Pawtucket Falls. Some of the bordering towns surrounding Lowell are Chelmsford, Tewksbury, Dracut and Billerica. In total, the city of Lowell has 13.8 square miles of land and only 0.8 square miles of water. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total population of 108, 522 as of the year 2012.

Every city has its own points of interest. In Lowell, American locals and foreign tourists have the convenience in accessing four major libraries within the borders of the city. In fact, these libraries already contributed to the history of the city. Aside from learning, these educational sites provide a sense of exploration to anybody who is interested in knowing more about the city’s culture and history. The four public libraries are called the Pollard Memorial Library, Center for Lowell History, Lydon Library and O’Leary Library.

The Pollard Memorial Library is considered to be the first public library in the city. It was established in 1844, in some of the rooms in the Old City Hall. At first, the city library held 3, 500 volumes, but it expanded the collection over 30 years. In order to accommodate the other volumes, the city government hired the services of Frederick W. Stickney, a local architect to build a new Lowell City Library. The library will be known as the “Memorial Hall”, which may be a commemorative act in honor of the dead veterans of the American Civil War. It was renamed in 1981 as the Pollard Memorial library. In 2012, the library can purchase the access of different databases for its patrons, including the New England Historic Genealogical Society, ProQuest and World Trade Press.

The other three libraries are in collaboration with the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Lydon Library is best accessed from the North campus. Its name is in honor of the person responsible for expanding and renaming the college, President Martin J. Lydon. On the other hand, the O’Leary Library is in the South Campus, and named after a former History professor and influential president in the past, President O’Leary. The Center for Lowell History can be located downtown.
