Mobile: Healthcare as a Priority

Mobile is a city located in the U.S. state of Alabama. Geographically, it can be found within the borders of Mobile County, of which it is considered as the seat of government. Mobile sits in the southwestern portion of the state, specifically at the Mobile Bay’s head. Its location is also pinpointed in the northern center of the Gulf Coast. The city of Mobile stands on 117.9 square miles of land, with a total of 41.5 square miles of water consisting of Mobile Bay. In total, the city has 159.4 square miles of area owned. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Mobile is home to a total of 194, 822 residents as of 2012. It currently ranks 1st largest municipality in the Gulf Coast and 120th most populated city in the whole nation. It is also considered the largest city in the Mobile County, and the 3rd most populous city in the state of Alabama. In addition, the city is part of the Mobile Metropolitan Statistical Area, of which it is the principal municipality. The Mobile MSA has a population of 413, 936 and ranks 127th largest MSA in the whole United States.

In the central region of the Gulf Coast, the city of Mobile is considered as the regional hub for medicine. The city boasts a total of 4 major medical centers within the borders of the city, and 850 licensed physicians and 175 professional dentists among medical personnel employed in Mobile. One of the major health care centers is the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center. It is the state’s largest hospital run by a non-profit organization. The said center was established in 1910, and now features 704 beds within its premises. Another notable healthcare center is the Providence Hospital, which was founded by the Daughters of Charity in 1854. The group is from the state of Maryland. The Providence Hospital is a high-rise hospital that has 349 patient beds. The Gulf Coasts’ first academic cancer research institution is also in the city of Mobile. Named as the USA Mitchell Cancer Center Institute, it was opened in 2008 by the University of South Alabama.

Other hospitals that provide health services and emergency care to the citizens of Mobile are the Springhill Medical Center, BayPointe Hospital and Children’s Residential Services, University of South Alabama Medical Center, Mobile Infirmary Medical Center and the Mobile City Hospital. Apart from these major medical centers, the city is home to emergency clinics, skilled nursing facilities, home health care services and outpatient surgical centers.
