The Historical and Cultural Attractions in Modesto

Within the borders of the U.S. state of California, the city of Modesto can be found. The city is part of the Stanislaus County, of which it functions as the seat of government. In terms of population, it is also considered as the largest city in the county it is part of. Geographically, the city of Modesto is in the area of the Central Valley, which can be found in the Northern region of California. Many American locals would remember the city of Modesto because of the 1973 film entitled “American Graffiti”. The award-winning movie was directed by a Modesto native named George Lucas, who was able to focus on the spirit of friendship and “cruising” down 10th and 11th streets in the year of 1962. The film was very influential that it led to a 1950s nostalgia revival, which include spin- offs like the Happy Days TV show. Apart from the movie, the soundtrack was also a success.

Apart from the film, the city of Modesto is known far and wide in the United States for its list of tourist attractions that lure American locals and foreigners all year round. One of the most notable buildings that are included in the tourism campaign is the McHenry Mansion. McHenry Mansion is a historical site that was built in the early 1880s. It was noted that the construction was completed through manual efforts alone. The site is also included in the official list of National Register of Historic Places. There is also the McHenry Museum, also owned by the rich banker and rancher, Robert McHenry.

The George Lucas Plaza is also opened to the public, in commemoration of the award- winning film with the deep connection to Modesto. The bronze statue in the plaza was inspired by the movie, American Graffiti, to honor the talented filmmaker and Modesto native. Other attractions include the John Thurman Field, Gallo Center for the Arts, The State Theatre and Downtown Modesto.
