Newport News: How the City Keeps Afloat
The city of Newport News is located in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is considered to be an independent city, since it is not part of any county in particular. It was recorded that the United States is home to 41 independent cities across the country, with a total of 38 cities under the state of Virginia, which borders on the Atlantic Ocean. Geographically, the city of Newport News is found in the Virginia Peninsula’s southeastern corner. Specifically, it lies along the northern banks of the James River, and extends into the southeastern side from Skiffe’s Creek. Newport News encompasses a total of 120 square miles, of which 69 square miles is land and the other 51 square miles is water.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a population of 183, 412 as of the year 2013. It ranks as the 5th most populated city in the state. In addition, the city of Newport News is also included in the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The MSA consists of Virginia Beach, Newport News and Norfolk, and ranks as the 35th largest MSA in the whole country with a population of 1, 576, 370. The city is home to different kinds of industries, namely shipbuilding and military.
Newport News is closely connected to the military industry because it has the U.S. Air Force- U.S. Army joint installation within its borders. The installation is called the Joint Base Langley- Eustis which is a military facility that serves both of the Langley Air Force Base and the United States Army’s Fort Eustis. Although they are joint bases, they are separated for miles. In addition, the Air Force reactivated and managed the 633rd Air Base Wing, which would support the installation functions of the different locations. Near the city, there are adjacent military facilities like Camp Peary and the Naval Station Norfolk.
The maritime industry is also prioritized in the city of Newport News. The city has a port along the James River. The miles of waterfront can surely be taken advantage of by the boating industry of the city. Furthermore, the Newport News Marine Terminals connect both the sea and rails, which make connectivity and deliver of cargo easier and faster. The Terminal also contains container cranes and heavy-lifting equipment, and has warehouse capabilities to boot. The shipbuilding industry is also one of the largest employers in Newport News.
