Adam Thoroughgood (1604-1640) of King's Lynn, Norfolk, England, came to Virginia as an indentured servant. At the end of his contracted servitude, he earned his freedom and became a leading citizen of the fledgling colony.

Norfolk: A City with Strategic Military History
Within the border of the U.S. state of Virginia, the city of Norfolk can be found. Norfolk is an independent city because it is not part of any particular county. Among the 41 independent cities in the whole U.S., the Commonwealth of Virginia has 38 within its borders, including Norfolk. Geographically, the city of Norfolk can be located in the Hampton Roads Metropolitan Area, specifically at the region’s center. In the whole state, Norfolk occupies the southeastern portion, near the confluence of the Chesapeake Bay and the Elizabeth River. The city’s borders include the Elizabeth River to the west, the Chesapeake Bay to the north and south, and the Virginia Beach to the east.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Norfolk is home to a population of 246, 392 citizens as of the year 2013. Currently, it ranks the 2nd most populous city in the state and 78th most populous city in the country. Norfolk is also part of the Hampton Roads MSA, which has an estimated population of 1, 672, 319. The metropolitan area consists of 7 counties and 9 cities, including Hampton, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Chesapeake among others. It ranks the 37th largest MSA in the United States.

Furthermore, the station supports 14 piers, 75 ships, 11 aircraft hangars and 134 aircrafts. Aside from the Naval Station Norfolk, the city is home to two Strategic Command Headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization or commonly called as the NATO.
Aside from its strategic military history, the city of Norfolk is also known as a major trade artery. Its location at the Chesapeake Bay’s mouth makes it a good location for the import and export of cargo. The port of Norfolk accepts goods from the Mid- West, Mid- Atlantic and even from international waters.
