The city of Norman is situated within the borders of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Geographically, the city of Norman is part of the Cleveland County, of which it functions as the seat of government. The incorporated area of the city is near the center of the city of Oklahoma, which is the largest city and the capital of the state. The only thing that separates the city of Norman from the Oklahoma City is the Moore City, which is also part of the Cleveland County. The city owns a total of 189.4 square miles of area, as reported by the 2010 Census. 178.8 square miles consist of land, and the 10.6 square miles consist of water.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city is home to a total of 110, 925 as of the year 2010. It ranks as the 3rd largest city in the state of Oklahoma, and the 235th most populated city in the whole country. In addition, the city is included in the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, and it has a population of 1, 322, 459, as reported by the 2010 census. The metropolitan area ranks 42nd largest MSA in the United States.
The economy of Norman is normally led by the existing research and education centers within the borders of the city. Higher education is prioritized, making the University of Oklahoma as the largest employer in the city. The state’s largest university employs an estimated 10, 700 personnel that provide the necessary support for approximately 30,000 students in the three campuses. The university is also a hub for technological and scientific research, making it a major driver of the city’s economy. In 2009 alone, the research industry received a total of $277 million contributions to fund different fields of research.
Apart from its research industries, the University of Oklahoma is also famous for their sporting events, specifically football. Collegiate sporting games are held on campus, and could gather as many as 80,000 spectators in a year. The football program of the university is also famous for winning seven times in the NCAA Division I National Football Championships. The university has the best winning percentage since the AP Poll introduction in the year 1936.
Within the premises of the three campuses, there are several museums that are open to the public, most especially students. One of them is the world- famous Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art. It boasts the largest American collection of French impressionist Art given to a university.
