Within the borders of the U.S. state of Texas, the city of Odessa can be located. The city is located in the Ector County, of which it functions as the seat of government. Geographically, Odessa is in West Texas, specifically along the southwestern part of the Llano Estacado, a region known as the Staked Plain. It is above the sedimentary deposit called the Permian Basin. Ector Country is mostly occupied by Odessa but a small portion extends to the neighboring Midland County. The Census Bureau reported that the city of Odessa encompasses an area of 44 square miles, of which 43.9 square miles are made up of land, while the 0.1 square miles is water. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city is home to 99, 940 residents as of 2010. It ranks 31st most populated city in the state of Texas. In addition, the city of Odessa is part of the larger Odessa Metropolitan Area, which encompasses the Ector County.
Oil is very much abundant in the city of Odessa; thus, it is only reasonable for citizens to take advantage of the industry. The oil industry is a major driver in Odessa’s economy but the city government is already looking for ways to expand the economy in case the oil wells start to dry up. To commemorate its contributions to the oil industry, the city of Odessa holds the Permian Basin International Oil Show during even-numbered years. The event is hosted in the Ector County Coliseum.
Apart from the oil, the city is also part of the La Entrada al Pacifico. La Entrada al Pacifico is defined as a trade corridor and an international project between the United States and Mexico. The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act designated it as “trade corridor 56” of which the route connects the U.S. state of Texas to the Mexican state of Sinaloa and vice versa. Retail is also a strong point of Odessa since the city is home to shopping centers, including a regional mall, Music City Mall. The tourism industry will also flourish with the planned construction of hotels in the area. Furthermore, the city is in contact with a new company that is known to be a developer of US Army helicopters. The business intends to establish its presence in Odessa in the future.
