Raleigh’s Arts and History

Raleigh is the capital of the North Carolina state. This city is dubbed as the ‘City of Oaks’ because of the plentiful oak trees that line up the city’s streets. The city is part of the Research Triangle region. Together with Chapel Hill and Durham, Raleigh completes the triangle of three cities. The Triangle originated in 1959 during the making of the Research Triangle Park. This park is located between the three cities and the city’s universities. Aside from the promising development of the city’s economy, the city is home to several educational, historic, and cultural sites. One of the main tourist sites in the city is the Progress Energy Center for Performing Arts. This is located in downtown Raleigh. This features three theaters. In addition, this serves as the home of the North Carolina Symphony. Another famous site in the city is the Walnut Creek Amphitheatre. This is a large theater for performing arts situated in the Southeast portion of Raleigh.

Downtown Raleigh has several art galleries that display the work of new and aspiring artists. If you fancy some local and contemporary art, downtown Raleigh is the place to visit. Some of the local galleries in downtown Raleigh include the Art Space at the City Market, 311 Gallery in Martin Street, Visual Art Exchange, and Bee Hive Studies in Hargett Street. Another famed art site to visit is the CAM Raleigh. This is a contemporary art museum situated on Martin Street. This gallery highlights and promotes new artists. The gallery’s collection is not permanent and it updates constantly to display art works of new aspiring talents.

Museums are also abundant in Raleigh. Some of the city’s famous museums include the NC Museum of Art in the West, NC Museum of History and the NC Museum of Natural Sciences. Both the Museum of History and the Museum of Natural Sciences is located near the city’s State Capitol. Raleigh is also home to several major colleges and universities like the North Carolina State University, which is the largest public university all over the state and the Shaw University, which is the first black university in the South.
