Meaning of City Name:
The Red River was cleared and made newly navigable by Captain Henry Miller Shreve, who commanded the United States Army Corps of Engineers. A 180-mile (289 km) long natural logjam, the Great Raft, had previously obstructed passage to shipping. Shreve used a specially modified riverboat, the Heliopolis, to remove the logjam. The company and the village of Shreve Town were named in Shreve's honor.

Shreveport is considered the third largest city in Louisiana. The city is the seat of the Caddo Parish. The Shreve Town Company founded the city in the year 1836. This company is a corporation that was established to develop a town at the juncture of the Texas Trail and Red River. Later on, the city of Shreveport has become the cultural and commercial center of the Ark-La-Tex region. This region is where Louisiana, Arkansas and Texas meet.

Aside from the health care industry, the city was once a player in the oil business in the country. In fact, the city is home to the Standard Oil of Louisiana, which is a local company. Later on, the Standard Oil of New Jersey absorbed the Louisiana branch. An economic downturn affected the small and large businesses in the city in 1980s. The economy of the city has transitioned to a service company. The gaming industry has grown too. The city hosts riverboat-gambling casinos.
The city of Shreveport is home to numerous theatres, performing arts groups and museums. This includes the Academy of Children’s Theatre, Barnwell Memorial Garden and Art Center, Artspace Shreveport, Hayride Diner, Louisiana State Exhibit Museum, Marjorie Lyons Playhouse, Louisiana Dance Theater, and the Multicultural Center of the South. In addition, the city is also home to the Meadows Museum of Art, Power and Grace School of Performing Arts, the Norton Art Gallery, the Robinson Film Center, House Concerts, and Little Theater. Shreveport is home to the Spring Steen Historical Museum. The city also has some interesting parks and recreational sites like the Chimp Haven, which is a chimpanzee sanctuary, Clyde Fant Park, and Ford Park. Gators and Friends Park, an exotic animal park, is located in the city as well.
The city of Shreveport also has several annual events and festivals. This includes the Cinco de Mayo fiesta, Mardi Gras Parades, and Highland Jazz and Blues Festival. Holiday in Dixie is also celebrated in the city. This is the annual spring festival. Independence Bowl, which is held close to New Year, is also celebrated in the city. An annual celebration of the crawfish, Mudbug Madness, has been celebrated in the Shreveport since 1984. Each autumn, the city celebrates the State Fair of Louisiana.
