Meaning of City Name:
The city of Vallejo was once part of a Mexican land grant of 1844 by Governor PÃo Pico to General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo called the Rancho Soscol. The city was named for this original Mexican military officer and title holder, he helped to settle and oversee the north bay region. The Existing Neighborhoods in Vallejo
The state of California in the United States is home to the city of Vallejo. The city is located within the borders of Solano County, of which it is the largest city in terms of population. Geographically, the city of Vallejo is situated in the San Francisco Bay area, specifically on the northern part of the East Bay region. It is along the northeastern banks of the San Pablo Bay, and can be accessed by the Interstate 80 which is between two cities namely Sacramento and San Francisco. In terms of area, the city of Vallejo has 49.5 square miles, of which 18.8 square miles are water, while the other 30.6 square miles are land.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city of Vallejo is home to a total of 115, 942 citizens as of the year 2010. In terms of population count, the city ranks 1st most populous in the whole Solano County, 49th most populous in the state of California and 223rd most populous in the whole country. The city was founded in the year 1851, but it was not until 1867 that the town was incorporated into a city. For many years, the city is known as the “V-Town” “The V” and “Valley Joe”. Its motto, City of Opportunity, is also a good slogan for the city’s tourism campaign, which highlights the different industries within Vallejo’s boundaries.
The city of Vallejo is known to be divided into 5 districts. Each district boasts of distinctive features that makes it unique and a must-visit spot for locals and tourists alike. The 5 districts are named West Vallejo, South Vallejo, North Vallejo, East Vallejo and Mare Island. The most notable section is the Mare Island, which houses the newest and oldest homes in the city. It is also the home of the oldest Naval Base.
The historic section of the city is located in West Vallejo. As the oldest district among the five, West Vallejo is home to three historical neighborhoods. The three neighborhoods are called the Vallejo Old City Historic District, Saint Vincent’s Hill Historic District and the Bay Terrace Subdivision, originally known as “Georgetown”. Housing subdivisions dominate North Vallejo. Chabot Terrace, the city’s largest housing project subsidized by the government, is also located in North Vallejo. Among other subdivisions are the Lofas-Lakeside housing, Country Club Crest housing, College Hills and the College Park. The most populated section of the city is the East Vallejo due to its manor neighborhoods, like the Skyview Terrace, Steffan Manor and the Granada Hills. South Vallejo may not be known for its population, historical sites and land area, but it is known to be the birthplace of the Sick Wid It Records, an E-40s record label and The Click, a famous rap group.
