Waterbury – The Brass City
Waterbury is a city in the state of Connecticut. This is located in New Haven County in the US state of Connecticut. The city is nicknamed ‘The Brass City.’ According to the 2010 census, the city’s population reached 110,366, which ranked the city as the 10th largest city in the New York Area and the fifth largest in the state.
The city got its name from its industrial interests in the past. In fact, during the first quarter of the 20th century, the city of Waterbury was the leading manufacturer of brassware in the US. This includes castings and finishing. In addition, the motto of the city is ‘Quid Aere Perennius?’ This means ‘What’s More Lasting than Brass?’
Many interesting landmarks are scattered throughout the city. These landmarks draw in thousands of American locals and foreign tourists every year. The city’s most prominent landmark is the Union Station Clocktower. An architectural firm constructed this tower. In addition, this was modeled after the Torre del Mangia, which is located in the Palazzo Publico in Italy. The construction of the tower costs $332,000. It stands 240 feet high and it has 318 steps. Seth Thomas Co created the clock on this tower. The dial of the clock is 16 feet in diameter and its Roman numerals are 5 feet tall. The clock tower officially opened on July 12, 1909.
Another prominent landmark in the city is the Municipal Stadium. This was built in the year 1930. This was originally created as a dog track considering its unique layout. The stadium can hold about 6,000 people. The stadium is currently being used as a sporting event venue for football and baseball. The Apothecary building is another known landmark in the city of Waterbury. This is the focal point of the Exchange Place at the center of the city. This was built in 1893. It previously housed the Apothecaries Fall Pharmacy, but it was converted into 12 luxurious apartments in 2013.
The Soldier’s Monument located at the west side of the city is a tribute to the Civil War. George C. Bissell sculpted this landmark. It stands 48 feet high. The monument was dedicated on October 23, 1884. Another famous monument in the city is the Veterans’ Monument. Luis Fucito designed this monument. This was created to honor the men and women who served in the wars of the US. This stands 15 feet high.
