Waukegan – City of Progress

Waukegan is a city in the state of Illinois. This is also the county seat of the Lake County in the US state of Illinois. The city reached a population count of 94,267 in 2010 making it the ninth largest city in the state and the fifth largest on the western shore of the Lake Michigan.

The city of Waukegan is listed as one of the oldest communities in Illinois. Waukegan started out as a French trading post. In addition, the city is also known as ‘Little Fort,’ as this was an Indian settlement in the past. By virtue of its population, the city became the county seat of the government in the year 1841.

The community in Waukegan was proud of the growth in their community and the community no longer wanted to be known as ‘little.’ Thus, on March 1849, the residents of ‘Little Fort’ changed the name of the town to Waukegan, which means ‘trading post’ or fort in Potawatomie Indian. The city continued to grow, develop and diversify. In 1859, it was incorporated.

The city of Waukegan has many interesting events all year round. One of the most popular events is the ArtWauk or ArtWalk. This is an art event that is celebrated every 3rd Saturday of the month. This happens in downtown Waukegan. The event highlights sculptures, paintings, films, theater, comedy, dance, music, food, performance art, and pedicabs in the Waukegan Arts District. Another famous event celebrated in the city is the Fiestas Patrias Parade and Festival. This event highlights as well as celebrates the independence of the numerous Hispanic countries. These countries are represented in the city and the countries include Honduras, Belize and Mexico. A holiday festival that is popular among tourists is the HolidayWAUK or Holiday Walk. This event is also celebrated in downtown Waukegan.

Aside from the events celebrated in the city, there are popular tourist destinations scattered all over the city of Waukegan. One of these tourist destinations is Downtown Waukegan. This city site highlights a lot of events, restaurants, shops, bars, and other establishments. Downtown Waukegan also houses the city’s Public Library, the Lake County Courthouse, and the College of Lake County. In addition, the city is also home to the Genesse Theater, the Lake County Sports Center, and the Waukegan History Museum.
